Imagine, kids in fifth grade still trying to memorize the most basic words. This is all wrong. These kids should be reading simple books. Sight-words are? a flawed method.

This is great. I completely recommend this approach in class. Fry's "Instant Words" (from his _The Reading? Teacher's Book of Lists_) have the 1000 most frequently used words in English. Getting the kids to recognize these words on sight (rather than through sounding them out) really improves their reading fluency. What's more, you can differentiate instruction by offering more advanced lists to more advanced readers.
